Virtuosi Tasmania
Grace Thorpe (violin), Meriel Owen (piano)
Holy Trinity Church, Launceston, 14 April
I went to Holy Trinity on Sunday (14/4) to listen to Grace and Meriel and I am so happy I did. I am so grateful to Virtuosi Tasmania for making this opportunity to hear this music available to us here in Launceston.
It was the Ravel Sonata No 2 for violin and piano in G Major which was particularly outstanding. It was played with such vigour, feeling and precision. Such a difficult piece. It was captivating from beginning to end. Both instruments pinging off each other, perfectly expressing Ravel's feeling of these instruments' quality of being 'essentially incompatible'. Fantastic. This piece - and the way it was so expertly played on Sunday - is such a great example of modernism in action and was a real treat to listen to. The experience has been with me all week.
